The Search
2022 was the year I dove headfirst into the exciting, albeit challenging, journey of finding my dream trullo in Puglia. The process was anything but straightforward, with the real estate market presenting its own unique set of obstacles.
Around 15-20 years ago, a trend began where many foreign buyers, particularly from England and France, started purchasing properties in the Itria Valley. They bought weathered trulli at ridiculously low prices, only to restore them for a fraction of the cost. This trend rapidly gained momentum, driving the market prices to soar exponentially. Today, even trulli in a deplorable state, little more than a heap of stones, are being listed by agencies for 80,000 to 100,000 euros. And let’s not forget the skyrocketing costs of renovations.
Despite these challenges, my determination never wavered. I spent countless hours scouring listings, visiting potential properties, and envisioning the possibilities each one held. My goal was clear: to find a trullo that was not only within my budget of 60,000 euros but also had the potential to be transformed into a multi-room haven, with an additional 100,000 to 120,000 euros allocated for renovations.
The search was arduous, but every moment of it brought me closer to realizing my dream. The pleasure of the numerous trips to Puglia served as a constant reminder of why this journey was worth every effort.
