First Things First: The Permit
First of all, no construction could begin without a building permit—especially here in Valle d’Itria 🍃, where the countryside’s beauty and the trulli’s uniqueness are strictly protected by local councils such as Alberobello, Locorotondo, Martina Franca and others.
The saga of my permit began six years earlier, when the previous owners initiated the application process only to see their plans stall under endless bureaucracy and shifting regulations. Ironically, the moment they decided to sell, the permit was informally granted on paper, yet the final steps for its release had yet to be completed.
As of June 2023, those steps were apparently done and I was awaiting the official permit—but things didn’t move quite as fast for reasons that remain unknown⏳.
In the meantime, the next step I tackled was securing a mortgage🏦, so I hired a construction engineer who handled the paperwork and would oversee all building and structural works once they began, with the aim of returning to the bank soon with the BoQ (“computo metrico”) and all other necessary documents.
Last but not least, my new field neighbour kindly cut the wild grass of my huuuuge fallow field to feed his milk cows 🐄, recreating that classic Apulian scene of straw bales scattered across rolling hills.
Amid a bureaucratic whirlwind just starting to unravel, this simple countryside moment was a raw emotion to hang on to while the dream was building up. 🌾✨
